So, you’ve got the perfect frame, you’ve placed your art in it and it’s looking great, but you’re worried about hanging it. Hanging framed art can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but with a few simple tricks you can become a pro in no time. So, without further ado, here are some simple tips to properly hang your framed art.
Purchase proper hanging hardware
Most frames come with wire and D-rings ready to hang, but you will need the right picture hanging hooks and screws for your weight and style of frame. If your frame is heavy or extremely long, you may need multiple picture hanging hooks to fully support the frame.
Consider spacing
Choose the spot on the wall that you want to hang your framed art and try to centre it on a wall, or between key pieces of furniture. If you are hanging multiple picture frames next to each other, try to keep at least 1 inch apart from each other to avoid making it look too busy.
Measure first
Before you hammer a nail into the wall, measure the distance between the top of your frame and the hanging wire or bracket. If your frame has a wire, pull it toward the top of the frame before measuring in order to mimic the tension it will have when the frame’s weight pulls on the wire and nail.
Make sure it’s level
There’s nothing worse than a crooked picture frame. Make sure you evenly distribute the weight of the frame between both sides of the picture hook (or hooks if you are using more than one) and use spirit level to check you have your frame level.
